Remote access to home assistant with tailscale VPN


Tailscale is a community addon that pledges zero config VPN connectivity.

Note: For this setup we assume that you have configured hassio for external access using duckdns.

Locate the addon in the complements store and install it.

Once installed start the addon.

Then create a free account here

Next open session in the console with the registered user created before from there you can configure and download client apps for your devices.

Then install tailscale in your phone and connect, device status will appear in the screen:

Get details for the homeassistant node and grab the fqdn (full qualified domain name:

Note: Your tailscale VPN dns name can algo be set in the admin console under [DNS]:

With the fqdn of the homeassistant device go to hassio mobile app and configure a connection using those url, for example:

Open hassio mobile and see what happens (you can disconnect from wifi or take a walk outside your place to verify that the connection is working via tailscale vpn):

If you disconnect the phone from tailscale, the hassio mobile app will not be able to connect to homeassistant:
